Ever wonder where professional resellers find all their amazing inventory? It’s not just luck—it’s a carefully cultivated skill. In the world of reselling, sourcing is the lifeblood of your business, and in this post, I'll take you on a journey through the different facets of inventory sourcing, from classic treasure hunts to mastering the mindset of a successful reseller.
The Locations: Your Treasure Map
The Thrift Store
Estate Sales & Garage/Yard Sales
Wholesale & Liquidation
Online Sourcing
The Thrift Store
For most new sellers, the journey begins in one of the most classic places: the thrift store. For me I remember the first time I stepped into a local Goodwill Store as a reseller, I felt overwhelmed. I had no idea where to start or what to look for. As time went on, I realized the importance of patience and consistency. This is where identifying your niche is so important (e.g. collectables, mugs, vintage clothing). Once you are able to know your niche, you need to develop a routine to visit Thrift Stores on a regular basis to catch new inventory. While doing so, be on the look out for quality and condition of items (stains, rips, or damage). Here is a pro-tip: Don't just look for what you know—keep an eye out for interesting patterns, materials, and labels you can research later.
Expanding Your Horizons - Alternative Sourcing Locations
Estate Sales:
While the thrill of the thrift store is a fantastic starting point, your sourcing journey doesn't have to end there. As you grow, you'll discover a world of alternative sourcing locations. Take for instance my favorite sourcing opportunities, ESTATE SALES. In most cities, estate sales take place at someone’s home after a divorce, or moving to another city, or a death in the family. The thing I like most about these types of sales is the potential for high-value or unique items. Here are my tips: Arrive early, bring cash (at least $200), and be prepared to haggle on the last day.
Garage/Yard Sales:
Just like estate sales, garage/yard sales usually take place early in the mornings at someone’s home. These have the most "neighborhood treasure hunt" feel. Here are my tips: look for signs in your local area, hit multiple sales in one morning, and don't be afraid to make an offer.
Wholesale & Liquidation:
For those ready to level up their business, a more advanced strategy involves buying in bulk through wholesale and liquidation. This approach entails buying large lots of products, often in pallets or truckloads, directly from retailers or liquidation companies. These lots typically consist of customer returns, overstock, or out-of-season merchandise, which means you're acquiring goods at a fraction of their original retail price. While it requires a larger upfront investment and an understanding of the potential risks—like unsaleable items or damaged goods—the payoff can be significant, offering the potential for higher profit margins and the ability to scale your reselling business more rapidly.
Online Sourcing:
Of course, in today's digital world, you don't even have to leave your house to find great inventory. Online sourcing has become an essential and convenient method for resellers. This strategy involves hunting for deals on various websites and platforms, from large marketplaces to specialized sites for vintage goods or specific product categories. The key advantage of online sourcing is the ability to search for specific items and brands from the comfort of your home, opening up a global market of potential finds. It requires a keen eye for undervalued listings, strong research skills to verify authenticity and sold prices, and a quick hand to snag a good deal before someone else does.
The Reseller's Mindset: The Skills Beyond the Hunt
Research is Key
The Art of Negotiation
Building Relationships
Research Key:
When it comes to sourcing, the most valuable tool you can have is not a specific location but your research skills. Before you even think about buying, you need to know what a product is worth and, more importantly, what people are actually willing to pay for it. This means using your phone to quickly look up "sold comps"—the prices that identical or similar items have recently sold for on platforms like eBay. Research allows you to move with confidence, distinguishing a potential goldmine from a dud and ensuring that every item you bring home has a genuine chance of becoming a profitable sale.
The Art of Negotiation:
Beyond just finding an item, mastering the art of negotiation is a skill that can significantly boost your profits. While it may feel uncomfortable at first, a simple, friendly question like, "Is there any wiggle room on the price?" can lead to a great deal. The key is to be polite and confident, and to always have your research in mind so you know the value of the item you're discussing. Remember, the goal is a win-win: you get a price that allows for a good profit, and the seller makes a quick and easy sale. Sometimes, the most powerful negotiation tool you have is the willingness to simply walk away if the numbers don't work out.
Building Relationships:
One of the most overlooked aspects of sourcing is the value of building relationships. Whether you're a regular at a local thrift store, a frequent visitor to a flea market, or you consistently buy from the same online seller, being a familiar and friendly face can open doors. Store owners and managers might give you a heads-up when new inventory is coming in or even set aside items they think you'll like. Over time, these relationships can evolve into a valuable network that gives you a competitive edge, turning your sourcing trips from a simple hunt into a collaborative effort.
Your Sourcing Journey Starts Now:
In the end, successful inventory sourcing is more than just finding good deals; it's a dynamic blend of strategy and skill. It begins with location, knowing where to look—from the classic thrift store and estate sale to modern avenues like wholesale and online marketplaces. But finding the right spot is only half the battle. Your success hinges on your skills: the ability to research an item's true value, the confidence to negotiate for a better price, and the patience to sift through countless items for that one perfect find. Finally, it's all tied together by the right mindset—staying persistent, building relationships with sellers, and knowing when to walk away from a bad deal. Sourcing is a continuous learning process, where every trip is an adventure and every item tells a story, making it the true heart of any reselling business.
